Can I get a car loan with a CTOS record?

The short answer

Often, yes. A CTOS record does not mean an automatic rejection. Small CTOS records, generally under RM2,000, are assessed case by case and some are still approved, usually through AEON Credit or Chailease rather than a bank. Larger amounts normally need to be settled first. A CCRIS blacklist, a Special Attention Account, an AKPK programme or bankruptcy are not approved by our lenders.

CTOS and CCRIS: what's the difference?

CCRIS is Bank Negara Malaysia's central credit database. It shows your loans and credit cards and how you have repaid them over the last 12 months. CTOS is a private credit reporting agency. Its report can include CCRIS data plus other records such as legal actions, trade references and unpaid bills reported by companies.

Lenders check both. Neither is a “blacklist” on its own: what matters is what the record says, how much it is, and whether it has been settled.

What lenders look at

  • The amount. As a rule of thumb, records under about RM2,000 are assessed case by case; larger amounts usually need settling first.
  • The type. A small unpaid phone or utility bill is treated very differently from legal action or a written-off loan.
  • Settled or not. A record that has been paid, with a settlement letter, helps a lot.
  • Your recent repayments on other loans and cards in CCRIS.
  • Your income and commitments, so the new instalment fits your Debt Service Ratio.

What is not approved

Our lenders do not approve a CCRIS blacklist (credit card, personal loan, PTPTN, housing loan or motorcycle loan), a Special Attention Account (SAA), an active AKPK programme or bankruptcy. If that is your situation, settle the account first and wait for your CCRIS record to show the clean repayments before you apply again.

How to improve your chances

  1. Check your own reports first: your CCRIS report from Bank Negara (eCCRIS) and your CTOS report from CTOS.
  2. Settle small outstanding amounts and keep the settlement letter.
  3. Keep 3 months of payslips and bank statements ready, with your salary paid into your bank account.
  4. Choose a car that keeps the instalment comfortable for your income; a lower loan amount is easier to approve.
  5. Apply through a dealer that submits to several lenders, so one rejection is not the end.

How Tiger Motors handles CTOS cases

We can't check your CTOS for you, but we submit your application to the lender most likely to accept your profile: banks for clean records, AEON Credit or Chailease when there is a small CTOS record. Tiger Capital can then finance the 10% downpayment. Try our 2-minute eligibility check to see your likely result and the cars that fit your budget, or read how our car loans work.

Common questions

Can I get a car loan if I have CTOS records?

It depends on what the record is and how much. Small CTOS records (generally under RM2,000) are assessed case by case, and some are still approved. We can't check your CTOS for you, but we can submit your application and the lender will tell us whether it affects approval.

Can I get a car loan if I'm blacklisted in CCRIS, under AKPK or bankrupt?

No. A CCRIS blacklist (credit card, personal loan, PTPTN, housing loan or motorcycle loan), a Special Attention Account (SAA), an AKPK programme or bankruptcy will not be approved by our lenders.

Can I check if I'm eligible before applying?

Yes. Our online eligibility check asks only for basic information and needs no documents. For an actual approval, we submit your documents to the lender.

Do I need a guarantor?

Usually not. We submit your application without a guarantor first, and only if the lender asks for one will we let you know. The exception is applicants aged 56 or older: they need a fixed monthly income, such as a pension, and a guarantor.

What interest rate and loan tenure can I get for a used car?

The maximum tenure is 9 years. Banks charge about 3.5% flat and finance cars up to 15 years old at the end of the loan. AEON Credit rates depend on the brand and the car's age: for Perodua and Proton, about 5.28% up to 5 years old, 5.58% at 6 to 10 years, and 9.1% (Perodua) or 9.9% (Proton) at 11 to 16 years; Japanese makes are lower, from about 3.99%. AEON finances cars up to 17 years old at the end of the loan and not older than 16 today. Chailease charges about 9% and finances cars up to 17 years old at the end of the loan (16 for Proton). For example, a 7-year-old car can get up to 8 years with a bank, but 9 years with AEON or Chailease. These are the estimates we quote; your actual rate is set by the lender.

How long does loan approval take?

Up to 3 working days after we receive all your documents. It can take longer if there are credit scoring issues or if the lender can't reach you for verification, so keep your phone on after submitting.
